Behind the cut are my plans for the next bit of Izana's canon. There are spoilers for season 02 of Knights of Sidonia and talk of a non-binary person adjusting to changes in their body. I tried my best to not be offensive or thoughtless in my words, but feel it's only fair to warn you since I have no idea what your life experiences are.
I should start by saying Izana's body is able to shift sexual features. It is part of their character design and there is more about it here.
Starting in the second season of Knights of Sidonia, Izana's body changes. They shift more towards presenting as female, growing breasts and such. Canon is vague beyond the breasts but does start assuming they become female because of their feelings for Nagate.
Despite these changes, I am going to maintain that they are intersexed and they will likely still identify as third gendered.
The first few episodes show them awkward and uncomfortable with the changes their body is going through, taking steps to hide the changes; wearing baggy clothing is about all they show in canon. My read in this is less body dysphoria and more akin of puberty awkwardness. This eventually comes to a head and the shift in physical characteristics becomes known, much to everyone's eventual relief.
I had been thinking of Izana maybe experimenting with binders, especially to wear under their flight suit* for piloting, and likely only once or twice.
And just to be clear, canon accepts those who are not on the gender binary, even going so far as to have specific changing rooms and bath houses for those who identify as Izana does. They are not suffering societal backlash for how their body is nor the changes they go through. In no way do I mean to write anything with any angst or trauma.
Still, I know our world isn't like that and so I don't want to cause any harm in presenting this part of Izana's story. I am more than willing to be vague about these changes if that would spare someone ill feelings. At this point, I don't wish to ignore these changes, and they seem like things that should be addressed for Izana's story, but they are not vital. I would be happy to discuss further or answer any questions below. I am screening the comments and allowing anonymous commenting to help protect anyone who feels the need.
Thank you in advance for any insight. Being white, male and cis, I am going to try my best to be respectful of this topic but can appreciate there are things I likely am not going to realize.
*Flight suits in Izana's canon are quite form fitting. In fact it's a malfunction to their flight suit that outs the changes they've been going through; i.e. it no longer fits their new form and it splits in front of Nagate. Okay, canon has it shredding to pieces but I am not going to do that. Breast are not that potent.
