garde723: (hospital: recovery)
Izana woke, slowly, into a hazy world of pain. The blankets felt odd against them until they remembered the combat and realized they'd lost their right arm and left leg to the damage their garde had sustained in both the physical attack on their unit and when Tsumugi deflected the massive Heigus particle blast that had been aimed at Sidonia. Running their tongue around their dry mouth, they blinked a few times before being able to fully open their eyes and look around. A hospital room.

And someone was holding their remaining hand.

Daisuki: Best budThey looked up to find Daisuki, their old friend, smiling at them with tears in their eyes. "Your grandmother had to return to duty. She just left."

"I'm..." Izana croaked before trying to swallow, prompting Daisuki to get them a glass of water. Sipping from the straw and working the moisture around, Izana finally managed, "I'm sorry I missed her. And I'm sorry I haven't called you." As she spoke, Izana looked around, hoping to find Nagate waiting as well, but the room was empty.

"He's outside with your other friend," Daisuki said, seeing Izana searching. They shifted to the side so Izana could see Nagate asleep in the chair out in the hallway, with Yuhata asleep beside him...and leaning onto his shoulder. Izana's jealousy must have scowled, for Daisuki continued. "They've been here for 12 hours now. I see why you like him, though he is rather narrow minded."

Blushing, Izana looked away, which made Daisuki laugh. "You are too proper, Izana. You need to relax and have a little fun. Look me up once you're on your feet and we'll go singing. With or without your Nagate."

"Daisuki!" Izana blushed even more, scandalized by her friend.

(Warnings for combat injury and the lose of limbs.)

Today was supposed to be nothing more than drills to familiarize Tsumugi with the clasp formations and to get the garde pilots more used to her. The gauna had other plans, but such is the life of a combat pilot. Tsumugi had spotted the gauna cluster, a larger one but not massive, and had flown off on her own.

Now, Izana flew after her with the rest of the pilots who'd been doing the drills. Izana's usual fear of combat kept them company as they engaged with the nearest garde units to form the clasp that would increase their trust to have a chance of catching Tsumugi in time. Over the comm, the command technicians recited information as it came. The ship was in fact the one the colonists had set out on now claimed by the gauna. The idea and what may have happened to the colonists left a cold lump in Izana's heart.

As Tsumugi approached, the ship launched dozens of smaller gauna, which the chimera ignored. This turned out to have been a mistake as the gauna circled her and then rapidly began growing their ena, trapping Tsumugi and cutting her off from Sidonia communications!

Finally, the squads neared her position, Tanikaze of course getting there first with his newer booster rocket. Just as he was within firing range however, Tsumugi burst forth from the trap, tearing through the ena with her claws. Over the screens Izana could see that she'd been hurt and the scream of rage her friend let loose through the comms only confirmed it. As she flew at the gauna, tearing into them in blind rage, the ship released hundreds more.

The gardes began firing at will, trying their best not to hit Tsumugi, which worked well but spoiled many shots. Nagate and Command tried to calm Tsumugi but to no avail and finally the inevitable happened. Tsumugi was struck once, twice, and then several times by gauna tentacles, sending her spinning out of control and into a group of gauna who closed in.

Nagate couldn't find a clear shot.

No one else could either and no other pilot moved to help.

Not even considering the risks, Izana charged forth, full throttle to her booster. Piloting as if they were a solar wind, they seemed to know where everything was; gardes, gauna, debris, everything. Izana didn't dodge attacks so much as simply not be there when it would've hit. As they flew, they called out to Tsumugi to calm down, to pull back, but was ignored. They they were at the cluster and engaging their garde's arm blades, they slashed at the tentacles, freeing Tsumugi just as another gauna struck the garde.

Shocked at the attack and calling out in fear, Izana's cry proved to be what Tsumugi needed to hear to break out of her rage. She grabbed Izana's damaged garde and began the retreat that she'd been ignoring. As they withdraw, Izana kept an ear and eye out on the battle. The gardes were doing a good job of keeping the smaller gauna off Nagate but after a few moments, the larger cluster shifts. Confused chatter called out different opinions and warnings as to what is going on, but Nagate's voice cuts through it all.

"It looks like a Heigus canon. A large one!"

"Look out!" Someone yells and then Tsumugi is saying, "Izana, brace yourself!" and then the universe goes crimson and there is thunder in space.
garde723: (helmet: huh)
The next week was one of relative peace aboard Sidonia. Gauna engagements were few and so Izana had a fair amount of time to themself, which they decided to spend with Tsumugi to help socialize the chimera. Often Nagate would join Izana--he took any chance he could to spend time with Tsumugi as well--and even Yuhata took time to meet the newest member of the crew, ostensibly to evaluate Tsumugi as a combat resource.

(Since becoming Sub-commander, Yuhata has become even more serious and demanding.)

It was during Izana's times alone with Tsumugi that they came to a startling realization; Tsumugi sounded an awful lot like Hoshijiro used to. In fact, now that Izana had noticed, an unnerving amount of Tsumugi's mannerisms reminded Izana of Hoshijiro. Could there be some link between Tsumugi and the ena clone of Hoshijiro?

Izana did not know what to make of this new information and so kept it to themself.

At the end of the week it was announced that Sidonia would be changing course to the Lem star system, towards the planet the colonist who were feed up with the war with the gauna had set off for. Officially, it was to check up on them. Unofficially it was to intercept a large gauna cluster that was making its way towards the planet. All of which was passing through Izana's mind as they floated in space with Nagate, Tsumugi, and Kunato during a break from drills to assess how well Tsumugi might interact or fight with garde units.

"That must be the Lem Star System," Tsumugi said through the comm systems.

"Wow! You can see it from here?" Izana asked. Izana knew which direction the System was, and even which of the stars it was, but that was only because they had looked at the navigational charts. To them it was a star only slightly larger and brighter than those around it. "Can you see the colonists?"

"No, sorry. Even I can't see that far."

Izana watches for a few more moments, their suit automatically venting jets of gas to maintain their position. "I hear the guana cluster is slowly making its way to the Lem Star System. I hope the colonists are okay.”

Kunato scoffs. “We need to worry about that gauna cluster more than we do the colonists.”

Izana repositions themself to turn towards Kunato, who floats over Tsumugi’s other shoulder. “Huh?”

“We have no way to defeat it, not with the weapons we currently have in Sidonia.”

“Ah, but there’s still a chance the we don’t even need to fight it, right?” A slim hope Izana realizes but a worthy one.

"That’s absurd.," Kunato replies scornfully. "Is that your view as a member of Sidonia’s military force? That we should just try to sneak past it, praying that the enemy doesn’t do anything? That is nothing more than a nest of evil creatures. We have no other choice but to fight. We need to arm ourselves with the weapons needed, to destroy our enemies as soon as possible."

"I want to eliminate the gauna threat just as much as you do,” Nagate argued, coming to Izana’s defense. “And I agree we have no choice but to fight. It’s just that there are different types of gauna. Who knows? We still could negotiate and have peace one day.”

"That sentiment may get you killed, Tanikaze. Have you forgotten how many times the Crimson Hawk Moth nearly killed you?"

Exasperated, Izana exclaimed, ”Why are you always so condescending, Kunato? I mean, we’re all the same age.”

Before he can reply, Tsumugi, nervous by the fighting, interrupts. "Say, Izana, can I see that picture of a cat?"
garde723: (i didnt sign up for this!)
The possible friendly gauna, Tsumugi Shiraui, turned out to be a chimera; a gauna-human hybrid, or at least that is how Kunato explained it when he introduced her to all acting pilots and pilot cadets after the battle. It seemed that after failing as a combat pilot, he'd taken over his family's company and had somehow developed the chimera as well as a new form of the artificial kabi Sidonia needed so badly to have a fighting chance against the gauna.

The meeting to introduce her had gone as well as one might expect, fear was a hard thing to overcome, and just as Nagate and Izana had entered, someone had thrown a pipe at the garde-sized* humanoid and chants of "Get ride of the gauna!" had begun, as well as shouts of the infamous mad scientist Ochiai's corrupt experiments and the great disaster they caused a century before.

Amidst the growing unease of the crowd, the chimera--Izana had a hard time thinking of it by a name--had spotted Nagate and had addressed him directly, which had mollified the mob somewhat. The peace, such as it was, didn't last very long as the chimera grew agitated when she saw Nagate's wounds, worried he'd gained them when he had protected her during the combat.

The meeting had ended quickly after, which was likely for the best. A creature so large being so agitated in an enclosed space with small and fragile humans could not have ended well.

Now, a day later, Nagate had decided to visit the chimera because he was worried she was lonely. Izana, being a good friend had come along, though they had their doubts. First, that Kunato would allow them entry to Kunato Industries' labs, presumably where the chimera now lived, and whether the chimera had such things to worry about as being lonely.

Izana was wrong all both accounts. Kunato, in an unusual show of benevolence, had allowed them entry...which Izana quickly regretted. The lab was odd. Not the sterile environments of her grandmother's domain, but more like field labs that had been overgrown with simple organisms, like molds or lichens. The air felt humid and musky, and was clogged with enough motes, Izana wished they'd thought to bring face masks.

Seeing beyond a few meters was proving a challenge as well and both Nagate and Izana were startled when the chimera suddenly appeared and enthusiastically greeted them. The walkway they'd entered on proved to be above a cavity of some kind and they were at chest level with the hybrid, which was way too close for Izana's comfort. Both Nagate and Izana fell back, Izana instinctively pushing themself back away from the giant creature. It continued talking but Izana couldn't focus on the words, fighting their fear as they were.

Then the strangest thing happened. A shape appeared and Izana almost burst into giggles for it was nearly penis shaped.

"Please, call me Tsumugi," the shape said. The shape it turned out was a sort of probe the chimera could form, though Izana couldn't fathom why it would wish to do such a thing. Perhaps so that it may speak to humans on a level more to their scale? "I am over-joyed you came to visit me, Tanikaze-san! I was just thinking how I'd like to learn more about humans."

Nagate smiled and replied, "Please, call me Nagate. And this is Izana."

The probe turned to face Izana and they bowed quickly before the giggles could escape them. Tsumigi's enthusiasm reminded Izana so much of the Honoko sisters when they'd first come to the academy. It was almost child-like.

"It is a pleasure to met you, Izana-san." Tsumugi turned back to Nagate, and tapped its two feelers together. "Umm...umm...May I touch you?"

"Touch me? I don't really mind, but..." was as far as Nagate got before a dozen more feelers sprouted along Tsumugi's probe and picked him up into the air and running along his body.

Izana could feel a hysteria bubbling within them, which burst as Tsumugi then picked them up into the air for the same treatment she was still giving Nagate.

"Put me down!" Izana yelled and was promptly let go, though only after Tsumugi had lowered them closer to the walkway. "It was good you asked Nagate, but you didn't ask my permission." Tsumugi bowed the head of her probe, clearly shamed. "I am not angry at you. I understand your enthusiasm got the better of you, but you must strive to be better!"

"I will Izana-san, and please forgive me. May I touch you?"

Izana didn't see that they had a choice. How else was Tsumugi to learn of humans of they didn't offer to help?

garde723: (dedicate: worried)
Izana climbed the stairs that ringed the core of the Residential district with some effort, their only company the hollow creak of their sandals (someday they really needed to get a pair that made a less obnoxious sound) and the rustle of the camphor trees in the gentle breeze the atmospheric generators caused. The air was cool but still breath able, despite their having already climbed over two kilometers 'up' towards the height of the Residential district, and their baggy sweat jacket kept them warm, despite the shorts they wore.

This was supposed to be a day spent with Nagate but, of course, command had need of him and so here Izana was, climbing all by themself towards the shrine to pray and take in sights. They'd discovered the shrine in their studies of Buddhism, as inspired by Abe no Seimei, and was happy to discover this one shrine aboard Sidonia. Though not exclusively Buddhist, the trip would still be educational and intriguing...or would have if Izana hadn't had to do it alone.

Sighing, they paused to look up towards the path yet to come and then back towards the way they'd already come. "This is no fun," they allowed but then again, they'd already climbed far enough that turning back would be a longer walk. And there was likely an elevator up past the shire they could use to go back down after the visit.

They day had started so well, too. Izana had been woken by a call to meet with Yuhata, now sub-commander of Sidonia, and Sasaki, the chief engineer of Toha Heavy Industries; the company who made and maintained the garde units of Sidonia. Izana had no idea why they'd been called to such a meeting, but it turned out their idea of using secondary computer systems to search for needed resources while on duty had caught the attention of the Captain and she'd authorized an update to the sensors and computer system to Izana's garde unit. The meeting was merely to formalize the change and to get Izana's feedback on how the sensors and new computer system could function without interfering with the garde's primary purpose.

To say Izana had been stunned and honored would be to understate the event.

Later in the day, they'd meet up with Nagate to share the news but as usual, his mind was on the ena-clone of Hoshijiro. Or rather its absence. Admittedly, Nagate's single mindedness could be trying, but he was her friend and so Izana put the matter from their mind and kept their friend company is his grief. It had gotten so bad he barely ate!

Speaking of food, Izana was feeling a little like a snack, and so they stopped at the nearest bench to rest. Opening the bento and looking at all the rice balls Hiyama had made for them, Izana knew they couldn't eat all of them.

Izana had hoped the climb to the shrine might cheer Nagate up, but then Yuhata had to call with some urgent business. Izana couldn't help the surge of frustration and, yes, they may as well admit it to themself, jealousy. They'd made plans days ago, and why did it always seem that plans with Izana were the ones that got changed? And why did it always be due to Yuhata? It was enough to make Izana think there was something beyond chance at work.

Catching the faint sound of a whine, Izana looked up just as the sound reached a louder pitch and Nagate flew up to her level, some sort of propulsion unit on his back. "Oh good, there's still rice balls left!" he called out in much of his old cheer. Had something happened?

"Of course there are!" Izana called back. "I couldn't eat these all by myself."

Far down below, Yuhata looked up; though she could only see the blue glow of the emergency evacuation unit she'd loaned Nagate so that he might make his date with Izana. Sighing and shaking her head, she said, "I don't know why I help those two," before turning to go back to work.

Izana made it to the ready room just as they see the Tsugumori, Nagate’s grade unit, blast off to catch up with the other squads that had already launched. Like the other pilots already there, Izana looked over the situation monitors, quickly evaluating the threat and ways to face it. The lose of their time with Nagate, having been interrupted by the guana alarm, suddenly seemed not so great a thing. It was a single guana, but one of great mass; or perhaps several linked together. The spectral analysis hadn’t come in yet and so there was only a guess to the one core.

Startled, Izana realized Nagate had now caught up and passed the other squads that had launched, which should have been impossible in the older grade unit he piloted.

“Tanikaze is getting the new toys again,” one of the other pilots quiped with a smile, and Izana saw he is likely right. How else would his one ship over come the thrust of four gardes in clasp formation?

On the screen, Nagate reversed trust and was taking aim with his ballistic acceleration device and fired at the guana's core. Every one held their breath as they waited for the shot to hit, and hit it did…but it failed to pierce the outer ena and strike the core. Nagate fired twice more and then the final analysis came over the speakers from the Command room.

"The guana has a layered composition; ordinary ena and ena composed into psuedo-core penetration rounds in alternating layers!"

“They’ve already adapted to our core penetration rounds,” Izana whispered just as Yuhata said the same over the intercom.

“All pilots, form a wedge formation to support Tanikaze. Keep firing to break down the ena and expose the core!”

A new alarm blared then, and one of the technicians called out, “New guana contact, coming from between the grade squads and Sidonia! New guana is advancing towards the combat zone at tremendous speed.”

"The new guana contact has passed the garde squad and is approaching Tanikaze!"

"Tanikaze, get out of there!" Yuhata orders, but it's too late. The guana is already at Tanikaze's position. On the screens, the pilots can see the new guana now and it is strange; though garde sized, it is not like the Crimson Hawkmoth that took the guarde units as its template. This new guana was almost humanoid, with arms and hands, a head (though seemingly helmeted), legs (though partially hidden beneath a bell shape that reminded Izana of ballgowns they'd seen in old historical files), and a tail. It also carried something in its right hand, something that could only be a weapon.

"Reading a massive surge in Heiges particles from the new guana!"

The entirety of the ready room and the command staff held their breaths as all knew they were about to watch Tanikaze die. There was no way the new guana could miss at this range. The guana fired the weapon and struck the original guana, attacking one of its own!

Shocked silence reigned, until a new voice, feminine in tone, could be heard over the comms. “Hello, I am Tsumugi Shiraui. I look forward to meeting you.”

Behind the cut are my plans for the next bit of Izana's canon. There are spoilers for season 02 of Knights of Sidonia and talk of a non-binary person adjusting to changes in their body. I tried my best to not be offensive or thoughtless in my words, but feel it's only fair to warn you since I have no idea what your life experiences are.

[Link goes to a youtube video of the Knights of Sidonia theme song. The video also has a lot of footage from the battle Izana is reflecting on here, after the 2 minute mark.]

Izana stood with the other survivors of the attack on Guana 542; to date the largest Guana cluster Sidonia had ever faced. 200 linked gaunas joined together to create a super structure nearly 8,000 times the size of Sidonia herself, and deep within the mass, an asteroid with which the gauna had meant to obliterate Sidonia.

Not the most auspicious of enemy for one's first combat.

But Izana had survived. And with them, 9 of the original 48 pilots who set out on the seemingly impossible mission; a less than 20% survival rate. The horrifying thing was, that survival rate was the best the pilots had faced since the present conflict had begun, and it was all due to the new experimental Super High-speed Ballistic Acceleration Devices and the Core Penetration Rounds. Somehow Toha Heavy Industries had accomplished a miracle and created an artificial Kabi that was as effective as the only know substance which could kill the gauna.

Best yet, it could be mass produced.

All of this did little to lessen Izana's fear during combat, however, and their arms still ached with compensating from the kickback from the SHS-BAD and the struggle of doing so in a gravity field. A chill at the memory of the first attack nearly made them tremble as they stood listening to the Captain's speech. The guana cluster had been so massive, it was like attacking a moon; one that fired back at you. Against such a force of nature, Izana's fear just seemed natural and they gave up fighting it. What was the use of fighting a feeling when your entire scope was filled with the enemy?

And Izana had performed admirably, taking out several targets in the first wave of attack and saving Nagate at a crucial moment in his battle with the guana garde unit deemed the Crimson Hawkmoth. Of course, Izana had then been blasted out of the field of combat soon after by the Hawkmoth. This turned out to be to Sidonia's advantage as Izana was then outside of the Guana's field of influence and was able to give Sidonia reports of what was occurring.

Beside her, Honoka En cleared her throat and Izana came back to the present to realized the Captain stood before her and was saluting. Izana quickly returned the salute, cheeks flushing, and accepted the new wakizashi--made of the artificial Kabi--the Captain offered her. "You performed well, Pilot Shinatose. Though you were separated from the main body of the combat, your quick thinking allowed us to remain aware of how the battle progressed and plan strategy accordingly. Sidonia thanks you."

Izana bowed in thanks of the praise, hiding the smile pulling at their lips. "It was my honor to serve, sir."

As the Captain moved on to the next pilot, Izana realized something very strange. The fear they'd been carrying all this time now had a companion, hope.

garde723: (dress uniform: worried)
"Pilot Cadet Shinatose Izana," Captain Kobayashi announced through her officer's mask, "it is my honor to promote you to the rank of Pilot, with all its responsibility and privileges."

They stood in the captain's office, which was an honor in of itself; Izana knew. To have a personal meeting for such a promotion was unheard of. To the Captain's right stood her assistant and to her left stood Izana's grandmother, Yuri. Yuhata, as Probationary Commander's Aide, was also present and was holding a pilot's wakizashi, which she handed over to the Captain with a bow. The Captain in turn handed it to Izana, who accepted it with a bow.

"I shall prove myself worthy of this honor and will defend Sidiona with all my skill and life, if need be," Izana said and was shocked at how steady her voice was.

If only Nagate were there, they might not feel so much dread. Still, it was nice to have Yuhatta there at least.

Decisions

garde723: (could you not?)
Finally, Nagate has been forced to take a vacation. Even better, he has invited Izana to come along and spend the two days with him.

Unfortunately he has also invited Yuhata. >:{

Still, Izana can adapt. Besides, there is no way they are going to allow Yuhata to spend that much time alone with Nagate. The poor fool would find himself married without even realizing it!

And look, he has chosen a worn down inn for them to stay at. An inn so worn down, Izana wonders how it is standing or if it is haunted. They are not sure which would be worse.

But they put on a brave face regardless and keep moving forward. They can do this, they can survive two days of creepy inn and Yuhata's blatant (to everyone but Nagate it seems) attempts to woe Nagate.

Once all three of them are settled in and sitting about the common room, Yuhata pulls out a volume about the urban legends of Sidonia and turns to an entry of the mad scientist Ochiai. The entry is brief, only going so far as to say he was branded an outcast for his experiments with gauna; and possibly humans, if the rumors are to be believed. Of course, like all legends, no one knows what happened to him

Izana tries to laugh it off, but can't shake the creepy feeling. Especially when Yuhata grins like a cat that's stolen the cream and produces a key.

"Across the reservoir outside the inn, there's an entry into one of Ochiai's labs," she says in a hushed and dramatic whisper. "And this key will open it."

"I don't see why you want to go chase down a silly legend. We should just fish or something," Izana protests weakly but Yuhata bullies them into going anyway.
garde723: (embarrassed: le sigh)
It’s the day after the latest gauna attack and Izana is keeping Nagate company as he eats his lunch. Izana is still a few days away from needing to eat and so they are reading the news report from the latest attack.

“‘Gauna Cluster ship retreats’? What a sketchy headline…” Clicking their tongue as they continue to read, before stopping at the next article. “‘When will findings on the ena specimen retrieved by 704 Tanikaze unit be mad public?’ What’s this specimen?”

Nagate finishes chewing before he answers, his attention distant, “A Shizuka Hoshijiro the gauna replicated with ena. The three gauna we fought had shaped their ena to be like garde units. They were very difficult to fight."

Shocked, Izana can't help but stare, open mouthed, at Nagate as a sense of dread grows within. For his part, Nagate continues eating, deep in thought.

Izana's sense of dread has only grown in the coming weeks as the gauna encounters continue to become more frequent. Each encounter seems to only be barely won and at a heavy cost as the new gauna which mimic the garde units of Sidonia tear through pilots. Near invincibility, coupled with individual acting pilots seems to be turning to tide for the gauna as the pilots, trained to battle against slow moving behemoths, struggle to adjust their tactics.

And as if that weren't enough, Nagate is called to sortie after sortie. And even when he is not facing combat, he is spending all of his free time with the gauna Hoshijiro at the ET Research Center.

Izana fears both for their friend's health and their continued friendship.

There are many gods in the land where the sun is born. Some never gain fame and fade, some gain fame through direct action, and then there are some that gain fame simply because there is need. Izana is one such as this. Sprung into being decades ago, they are a new god and in their care are all those who are not comfortable in their bodies. Often this is those who would be called transgender, but not always.

The majority of Izana's beseechers are teens and Izana fights the youkai who would prey on their emotional turmoil. Word of Izana has spread and now they even have a place in heaven, though they are rarely there. They care more for protecting their charges you see.

This AU is based on the Noragami anime/manga. Their weapon is the yumi and a tanto blade for close quarters. They dress in the attire typical of a Japanese high school student with the addition of the tools of archery.

After the pilots took off to their mission, Izana found they had free time since, for once, they were not on the support and defense team kept on hand for any sortie. They decided now might be the perfect time to inquire with the mechanics about Nagate's garde unit, the Tsugumori. Izana's inquires brought them to the attention of Sasaki, the head of Toho Industries, the company currently in charge of repairing and developing the garde units and other weapons of Sidonia; which was both a good thing and a bad thing.

A good thing because if anyone could help, it'd be the head of Toho Industries.

A bad thing because Sasaki cut an imposing figure. Standing taller than most men, she was brash and too the point, and often would yell rather than speak. A habit likely developed on the production floors.

"Sasaki-san...,"Izana began to said with a bow.

"I haven't got time for formalities, cadet. I've got untis coming back here soon. And knows those pilots, those untites will need repairs. So speak up or get out of my way!"

"Yes, Sasaki-san," Izana nearly squeaked. "I am sorry to bother you. I was hoping I might inquire about any oddities with the Tsugumori. Obviously the unit isn't here but if there was records from it's last mission I could look over?"

"Records are kept with command. We didn't have to remove the comm unit though, got badly damaged. You're welcome to look it over, but that's all I've got. Everything else was scrapped or is out there likely getting damaged. These pilots never thing of us mere mechanics while they're out there fighting. Would it be too difficult -- Hitomi! WATCH THAT TORCH! YOU WANT TO BLOW US ALL UP?!? -- to try not to damage the units? I tell you..."

"If you could point me towards the comm unit?" Izana asked after nearly jumping out of their skin when Sasaki yelled.

"Over there," Sasaki said with a thumb jabbed over their shoulder. "Now, I've work to do."

Izana bowed, but the older woman had already dismissed Izana from her mind.
garde723: (you're funny)
Ultimately, Izana did get Nagate out of his room, though it they had to enlist the aid of the dorm mother Hayami-san to do so. It's hard to go wrong with a humanoid bear.

One swift strike of her cybernetic arm and the door to Nagate's room was opened and his grief exposed to them. Being polite and practical, Hiyama-san swiftly bustled him out, tsk-ing all the while about how much cleaning she'd have to do, and deposited him into Izana's care.

Nagate made futile attempts to resist but ultimately gave up, following Izana where ever they might lead him.

Knowing he hadn't eaten in some time, and knowing the cafeteria wouldn't be staffed since Hiyama-san was the only staff, Izana took him into the residential area. As they walked, Izana kept up a calm stream of conversation, pausing once in a while to allow Nagate a chance to speak. He never made an attempt.

Finally, his stomach spoke for him and so they sat him down at a bench and went off in search of something he couldn't resist. They quickly found a tempera vendor who promised warm saki, and so they ordered two portions; ostensively for each of them, but really incase Nagate's appetite returned and he needed more.

Soon enough, the shop owner returned with the order. He had even thrown in an extra carafe of saki since "she was such a pretty girl."

"Oh, thank you. But I'm not a girl," Izana pointed out with a smile. "Would you like the yen for the extra carafe?"

Laughing at himself, the owner replied that he didn't, since Izana was pretty regardless. Izana thanked him again and turned to find Nagate. He wasn't at the bench they had left him at but after a quick look around, Izana spotted him and two large men who were yelled at him. One even threw something at him!

Panicked, Izana dropped the tray of food and ran over but by the time they got there, the men had left, leaving Izana the choice of running after them or checking on Nagate. Izana chose Nagate, of course, and knelt down to gently pull away the hand he held over his temple, revealing a fresh cut from whatever the man had thrown.

"Are you alright?" Izana asked, darting daggers at the men's retreating backs. Cowards.

"I'll be okay. Let's....let's go somewhere else."

From that point Izana was careful not to leave Nagate alone. They still got hostile looks when people recognized him though, and so Izana took him to parks and shrines where there were fewer people. Slowly, Nagate's spirits seemed to improve. He started looking up and soon was looking farther ahead, even suggesting places to go. Even better, he ate several times!

"Thank you, Izana. For walking me around. I do feel better," he admitted as they rested at one of the arial walkways.

"I am glad. It was nice to walk about and see so much of SIdonia," Izana replied.

"Yes. I know I love Sidonia, but every new place I see, I love it even more."

Izana's reply was cut off by Nagate's watch beeping an alarm. In disbelief, they watched him pull back his sleeve to reveal the icons for a call to sortie. "Why is it always you who is called?" They asked, worriedly.

"I still get to fly?" Nagate asked in wonder, completely ignoring Izana's question. "Thank you again, Izana. I have to go."

And with that, Izana watched Nagate leave, his spirits completely returned with a call to arms while within Izana's heart a quiver of fear spasmed. Would they see their friend again or would this be the mission that claimed him?

Izana was taking a break from the other students, drinking some tea in one of the little used courtyards of the academy. The sunlamps and climate control had set a nice temperate day and the area was peaceful, which Izana needed. The morale of the student body had plummeted after the last battle with the gauna and the disaster that occurred. And all any could seem to talk about was how Tanikaze failed the mission, costing several pilots their lives. There were even mutterings that he deserved to have his pilot status revoked.

Izana didn't believe the reports--they couldn't see Tanikaze making such a grievous error--but the record was clear and so they couldn't argue for their dear friend's character, as much as they may have wished. They just wished the whole situation would fade and things could go back to the way they had been before the fateful sortie.

Their thoughts were interrupted by a polite, and somewhat awkward, cough. Looking up, Izana found Yuhata. Great, just what the day needed. Schooling their features to a neutral cast, they greeted the younger cadet.

"I am sorry to bother you, Izana-san. I was wondering if you had any news on Tanikaze? I have tried calling him directly but he has not answered."

Caught somewhat off guard by Yuhatta's courtesy, Izana took a moment to answer. "I am sorry, I know very little. He was released from the hospital a few days ago, but I haven't seen him since. He has kept to his room." And no matter how often Izana knocked, he had yet to answer the door.

Yuhata deflated a little at this news, obviously worried. "May I join you?"

"Yes, please do," Izana replied, moving over on the bench to make room. "I must confess I am worried about him. I feel he has taken the deaths from the last sortie very personally."

"Not to mention these rumors. I don't care what the official record shows, Tanikaze is too competent to make such an error! Those deaths were not his fault!"

"I agree with you, but I fear Tanikazi does not feel that way. Especially in regards to Hoshijiro''s death. If only we had some proof!"

"I may be able to find some..." Yuhata said softly. And then at Izana's curious look, explained, "The assistant commander, Seii Ichirou, wishes me to take his place beside the Captain so that he may bring his experience to the other pilots."

"What?!?! That's wonderful. Congratulations."

"I haven't agreed."

Taken aback, Izana asked, "Why? I've seen your records. Your exam scores more than prove your ability! I have not seen such scores before."

"Thank you," Yuhata replied, bowing her head. Was that a bit of a blush? "But I wanted to follow in the steps of my brother. I wanted to be a pilot, to defend Sidonia as one of her knights!"

"I understand," Izana said before taking a sip of her matcha. "Your life is your own to decide. But it seems to me that your talents and effectiveness would be limited as a pilot. I do not mean you would be a poor pilot, quite the contrary, but you would only be controlling one garde unit as a pilot. As the assistant commander, you would be controlling as many garde units as the situation needed. To me, it seems that is the greater use."

Yuhata looked up at Izana's words and pondered them. Nodding and smiling, she said, "You are correct. I will agree. And with my command access, I can look into what really happened in the sortie. We can clear Tanikaze's name and restore his honor!"

"I will look where I can as well. I know many of the mechanics and might have access to information about the garde units that are not within the computer records."

The two looked at each other and realized they had gone from rivals to allies. A strange development.

"We must be cautious," Yuhata said and held up her pinkie for Izana to shake.

"And subtle. Tell no one but each other what we are doing, until we have evidence and bring it to Tanikaze." Izana agreed, wrapping a pinkie around Yuhata's and shaking. "Together."

"Together!"

The target is a hive-type gauna cluster; estimated number of internal cores is twenty-seven. Total length, eight hundred and thirty meters. The presence of a Master Gauna is certain. Destroying it is your main objective.

Your secondary objective is to sever the tail. Doing so will significantly reduce the mass of their ena.

The enemy this time may be large, but we have experience fighting the gauna. You need not fear.

Izana-kun?

garde723: (why'd she have to come)
Izana stood at the glass wall of the bathysphere resolutely ignoring the other occupant of the craft. Deep in the water of the ocean section of Sidonia, they could see the silvery ribbon of an oar fish and the shape of a large sun fish. They could also see, reflected in the glass, Midorikawa Yuhata alternating between glaring at Izana's back and ignoring them with a furious resolve.

And the evening had begun so well.

Tanikaze Nagate had returned to Sidonia, rescued by a full two and fifty-six garde units, as had been Izana's plan. Though each pilot accepted the risk of reprisals from the command staff for the unauthorized sortie, not one pilot had been disciplined. In fact, the Captain seemed to have turned the sortie into a propaganda piece, with the news agency repeating the heroic story (minus any mention of it having been unauthorized) ever hour.

And Izana was beaming to have been a part of that, even if no one--not even Nagate--acknowledged their part in it.

Even more, Nagate, Kunato Norio, Shizuka Hoshijiro, and Hokoka En had all been promoted to full pilots!

But then Yuhata had shown up at the celebration, shoving her way between Nagate and Izana, bragging about being advanced to Nagate's old class, and putting on airs that she was now a senior student to Izana, calling them Izana-kun*. As if they'd know each other a long time and as if Yuhata weren't a year or two younger than Izana, no matter what class she was in.

And as the older person, they should show more maturity, Izana realized. Sighing, they studied Yuhata and searched for something to say. "Congratulations on your advancement.," she managed, without scorn or barbs.

Yuhata's head whipped around and her eyes narrowed. "Why did you interfere? I wanted to ride with Nagate, not you!"

Izana sighed again and rubbed at their sore ribs, where the door of the other bathysphere, the one Nagate and Hoshijiro were now riding in, had closed on Izana and Yuhata. "Perhaps if you had asked instead of shoving Nagate and making it seem like some sort of attack."

"You don't know anything."

"I do know that tricks like that do not work outside of dramas and manga. You should speak to him if you wish to spend time with him." Izana was one to talk. They kept waiting for Nagate to make a move and not making their own. Instead they found themselves always watching while Hoshijiro ended up spending time with Nagate.

"I suppose," Yuhata allowed with a huff, crossing her arms and scowling at a group of giant jellyfish. They road in silence a little longer, until Yuhata's shoulders relaxed and she grudgingly said, "Your plan for rescuing Nagate was a good one. It would've saved more resources had you acted sooner, but then with fewer pilots, I imagine the Captain would have been forced to discipline."

"Thank you," Izana said with an honest smile, hopeful for a friendship or at least a truce with the enthusiastic younger cadet. Izana had to admit, Yuhata had a nice smile when she wasn't putting on airs.

They might have had more time together but their phones started chiming the call for a sortie. Another guana had found Sidonia.

[OOC: *The honorific kun is used by people of senior status addressing or referring to those of junior status, by anyone addressing or referring to male children or male teenagers, or among male friends. So not only did Yuhata imply she is of a higher status than Izana, she misgendered Izana as well.]
