On Izana's sex and gender

Izana Shinatose is a genetically engineered human and is of a sex that has both male and female characteristics.
As per canon:
From the Anime
You're probably wondering which one, right? Am I a boy or a girl? I'm neither one. I guess you didn't know, living underground, but there are genders besides male and female now. It doesn't matter who my partner is for conception. When I chose one, my body changes on it's own.
From the Manga
I'm neither. I think you would't know, being underground and all. But recently there have been other genders besides male and female. It doesn't matter if you're partnered up with a male or female for procreation. And even if you don't have a partner, it's possible to reproduce your own clone through asexual reproduction.
Both of these are all great and good, except it seems Izana is talking about their sex here and not gender. Also, Izana later develops secondary female sexual characteristics in order to attract the person they become emotionally attracted to; cause things needs to be hetero-normative right? Okay, in the author's defense, they do seem like they may end up in a relationship with a woman instead of the male, but text, at least the translated text, keeps implying Izana became female and I don't wish to erase such a great idea as a third sex and gender queer character.
So here is how I am going to handle Izana's sex and gender. Izana does see themself as a third gender and has both male and female sexual characteristics but I am not going too much beyond that. When Izana becomes attracted to another, Izana's body may adapt to enhance certain sexual characteristics, but it will take some time for this to occur; likely a couple of weeks. Ultimately, if it happens, it will depend on Izana and careful communication with the narrators. Regardless of which sexual characteristics present the strongest (i.e. if they seem more female as per later canon), they will identify as third gender.
Also, I am fine with people mistaking their gender.
